The main language at São Tomé and Príncipe is Portuguese, followed by a few Creole languages spread over the two islands. Up to 98% of the children attend the primary school – which is four years of compulsory education –, but only 38% attend the secondary school.
Women in particular often drop out of school to provide for a family or earn money. While the main goal of the educational system is to reduce illiteracy, learning English is not mandatory and half of the country's teachers are under qualified. This has a strong negative impact on the country's tourism.
The São Toméan Round Table English school wants to enable young adults to learn English in order to be fit for the labour market of the future, to boost the tourism and thus strengthen the country's economy.
The English school is organized by Nilton Paquete and three teachers and is based in the capital São Tomé. There are two groups of 30 students each, which are taught three days a week for four hours (Mo/Wed/Fr and Tue/Thu/Sat). The aim is to successfully prepare students for an internationally recognised English test.
The money of the donation will be used to pay the teachers, the rent of the classrooms and the teaching materials for the students!
